How to create a GST invoice in India
A practical guide for freelancers, service providers and small businesses.
A good tax invoice should make the transaction easy to understand. Start with the supplier details, customer details, invoice identity, supply information, line items, tax information and payment details that apply to your transaction.
1. Add the supplier details
Include your business name and the business contact/address information appropriate to your invoice. If GST registration applies to you, include the relevant GSTIN.
2. Identify the customer
Add the customer's name and billing address. Where relevant, capture the customer's GSTIN and other details needed for the transaction.
3. Add invoice details
Use a unique invoice number and invoice date. Depending on the transaction, you may also need the place of supply, purchase order reference or payment terms.
4. Add items or services
Describe each item or service clearly. Common fields include quantity, unit, rate, discount, taxable value and the applicable tax rate. HSN/SAC information may also be relevant.
5. Check the tax calculation
For intra-state supplies, CGST and SGST may apply; for inter-state supplies, IGST may apply. The correct treatment depends on the transaction and applicable tax rules.
6. Add payment information
Make it easy for the customer to pay by adding the payment method or bank/UPI details you want to provide.
